How We Think About Innovation

november 5, 2025

What if we approached innovation by finding opportunities in the things that don’t change, instead of those that do? 🤔 I think the world would look quite different.

As founder of the world’s first analog watch focused on circadian health, I often get asked how I leverage AI. My answer surprises people: we purposely don’t.

Here’s why:
AI is undoubtedly powerful, but it’s also very much a hype right now. Using hype as justification for adding something to a product is dangerous. I think many ambitious founders will go down with the hype or get eaten by the bigger companies building the foundation models.

So why do I pour my life into Merivian? Because I see three things that will still be the same in 100 years and Merivian is at the intersection of these three:

⌚ 1. Our obsession with time
🔧 2. Our fascination with mechanical objects
🌙 3. Our pursuit of better sleep and health

Yes, I use AI in my daily work and recognize both its potential and dangers. But I wonder: what would the world look like if more companies focused first on finding opportunities in the things that don’t change, and made those things better? We might just end up in a world with less hype and more human flourishing.

Until that time, I keep pushing forward. I received this photo of the prototypes for Merivian Second Edition this morning. The engraved sleep-crystal isn’t yet assembled, but already I couldn’t be more proud of what this watch is shaping up to be.
